Toenail Reconstruction
Toenail reconstruction is a cosmetic procedure that can improve the appearance of your nails. The procedure is performed by a Podiatrist, who will apply a specialist gel to your nails, using UV light to cure and set it. This gel will help to improve the shape and colour of your nails, making them look more aesthetically pleasing.
How long does Nail Reconstruction last?
Nail reconstruction is a great way to restore the look of a healthy nail, but it should not be considered a permanent solution. The length of time that the reconstructed nail lasts, can vary from person to person, but it is typically around 4-8 weeks. The reconstructed nail can be in-filled over new nail growth after 6 weeks, but it is recommended that reconstructed nails are fully removed after 8 weeks and reconstructed, if you have a fungal nail infection.
How does Nail Reconstruction differ from Salon Gel or Acrylic nails?
Toenails are subjected to different stresses and environments than fingernails and as such need products that are designed to cope with these demands.
Toenail reconstruction involves a similar process to gel and acrylic nail application, however, uses a specific gel product that has added antifungal elements and which is has more flexibility than typical salon products.
The nail is designed to mimic a natural nail and is ideal for both men and women.
The reconstructed nail will not affect the growth of your natural nail and new growth can be in-filled when needed.
What will happen at your Nail Reconstruction Appointment?
A Podiatrist will prepare your nail initially, by removing bulk and any loose or flaky nail and then clean the nail with an antifungal preparation.
Layers of gel are then applied, formed, shaped and cured under UV light, until the desired nail is achieved.
Nails can be created to look as natural as possible, or painted, making them a great solution for both men and women.
Who can benefit from Nail Reconstruction?
Nail reconstruction works best when there is some natural nail to attach it to. Unfortunately, Nail Reconstruction is not possible, where there is no natural nail present.
Nail Reconstruction can be used on fungal, psoriatic and damaged nails and can hide discolouration associated with fungal nails.
It can also be used on nails that have split or broken due to trauma, to prevent damage while growing out, or on nails that have previously had nail surgery to resolve ingrowing toenails.
Nail Reconstruction can be used alongside some fungal nail treatments. Check with the Podiatrist to see if your fungal nail treatment is compatible with Nail Reconstruction.
